Full Version: Where to camp? Glastonbury

I'm unsure on where we should camp at Glastonbury this year as we will have the kids with us. wacko.gif

I thinking one of the family fields would be best but then we would miss out on alot of the company.

Anyway where are you planning on camping? If your going that is.

And any advice on where we should camp?
Sonny
I think we're gonna go for Kidney or Row Mead again, nice and central.
Lori
Erm hasn't this already been agreed? I'm not getting into where we're camping this year, I'll go where we go. It's all way too stressful.
joker
I'll be on Pennards, same place I think Reuben was last year.
Tort
I'm heading back to William's Field. Wasn't particularly impressed with Pennards last year and Dragon fills up too quickly to get 4 sizeable tents all in together even if you get there first thing Wednesday.
Ally
I think you should check out Family Field. Purely because we intend to be there next year, with The Millypede in tow and it'd be good if you could do a recce for us wink.gif

Aren't you camping with us? We're going to be somewhere near the jerk chicken place on the t'other side of Muddy Lane from Family. It's a 5 minute walk (at the most) from us to the Kids field.

Probably, nobody ever tells me anything wink.gif

The main worry is our huge new tent and finding space.
Dave
The family obberlong shall be in Pennards again I should think. Having camped about a bit on Pennards we think we found the perfect spot last year so will be heading for the same place again this year.

What time you planning on arriving? I'm sure we can save space through the medium of mime.

Not sure, hopefully wednesday and in the morning, but that will depend on traffic stuff. Its quite a long way from Norfolk! Personally i think you should tape of the area and get Becks to guard vicious dog stylee.
becks
I'll do it. Grrrr and all that.
Olivia
Pennards for me. I liked our little spot last year. smile.gif

whs. I'm camping where Hurlage says, mainly because that's where Rebecca told me I was camping.
becks
Not true! I wanted to camp in Family but with a few of us and 2 children it's not possible or probably fair.

I like the Family field because it's close to everything. I also like the Jerk Chicken Shack because it does cocktails & has sofas and hopefully breakfast. So, I thought that I'd perhaps like to be near to where I used to be & also cocktails sounded good.

Arrgh! That's where I'm going! Nobody has to come, it would just be nice and happy clappy campy no? Fucky filthy fieldy if you like.

If you - the Menacetraps - go to Family you will be on your own sad.gif

Right, now that's settled how many of us will there be? How much room will we need? About the same as last years BC?
sadwitch
We were planning on being up pennards as that's our prefered spot though now Vicki has bailed out as she doesn't want to leave her 18 month old for 4 days we're more open to persuasion.

Camp with us & then we don't have to have Lori banging on about missing you. Solved.
tim

I like the suggestion by Becks mostly because she said cocktails.

However, if there's going to be a contingent up Pennards way then that just provides a camp to visit.

Gates open at 8am frantics.gif Is it always 8?

Oh my God, I can see a 2am start.
ali-cat
I think it used to be 10, but I'm sure the year we were in the travelodge it was 8.

Does this mean there a camp MB we can join in with?

We're getting a cheap pop up tent as an on site bolt hole & want somewhere that it'll be safe when we aren't in it smile.gif

A holiday home? You'll get jealous villagers burning it to the ground smile.gif
Dave
well when you all get yourselves sorted let me know whereabouts and if a flag or some other identifying feature will be present and I will bring the troops over for a shuffty on the Wednesday or Thursday.

Our camp will be on Pennards toward the Glade entrance of the field. Where the toilets are if you head diagonally upfield (toward the Park), when you are far enough that you figure you can't smell the toilets, then that will be us. We will be flying a rainbow peace flag and possibly a Brothers bar flag (if they send one with their goody pack this year). If you happen to pass that way then say hi.

becks
Right, I (and those I wasn't mean & bossy to smile.gif ) will be over the hedge from the family field, on Big Ground, Muddy Lane side. ***(Hopefully close to the hedge and half way between the pylons & the loos (does everyone think this is far enough from the smell?).

We will be identifiable by a 7metre pink Union Jack flag - I know this is a gay symbol but I don't care. Also, it may not go up as spazzy Simon & I have to erect it. Hmmm sexy time.

MU> If you want to stick the tent in with ours you are welcome.

Also, I've just looked at Glastoearth & the Reggae Cafe will be there. Yay!

***EDIT - Half way between is too far. A quarter of the way up, not far from Reggae Cafe.
ali-cat
I can't make GlastoEarth work so is that a nice distance from the pylons and away from the evil buzziness of them?

Yes, quite a long way. We also need to be aware of the loos, I'm thinking that a quarter of the way or a third of the way between the loo and the pylon will be good, the pylons aren't close there. Somewhere pretty close to the Reggae bar.

Oh god, this is so exciting. Who is doing the fire? Robin!

Ali - If you look at this map - http://www.gfhl09.com/data/image/fineguide_09m.jpg

Look at the family camping in Cockmill then go to the top of the lock up sign we should be just the other side of the hedge. Does that suit everyone?

What cant you get to work?

You need GoogleEarth installed. Get it here, it is free

Open it up and see if it works. You do need a decent internet connection and a good graphics card. If it works on its own then with google earth open and running click on this link.

GO HERE

You will be asked if you want to download the file, there may be a security warning appear at the top of the page, right click on it and select 'download file' You will then get a box for the downloading options, select "Open".

The file is very small and will only take a second to download, google earth should then become focused and in the places tab, under Temporary places there should be a branch called GlastoEarth2009. This is the glasto earth part.

open up the tree and look for Bonus Features and under that should be GlastoEarth 3d, check the box next to it an open up its branch. You should see the names of areas of the site and in front of them will be little folders that are flashing as GoogleEarth downloads the data. Wait until they are all folders with green dots on them

Look further down in the Layers section and check to make sure the Terrain box has a tick in it.

You are now set to look around the site.

Go back to the Places area and double click 'the pyramid' under the GlastoEarth 3D tab, the view should move above the pyramid.

Move the mouse around and when it turns to a little hand left click and move the mouse slightly. The view will move with the mouse. Try this for a bit, then click back on the pyramid in the tree, the view will go back to above the pyramid.

On the right hand side there are two round controls and a long thin one. These control the direction and height of the view. If you cant see these controls, hover the mouse over the 'N' in the top right of the screen and they will appear.

Ill start with the middle one first, this moves the view in compos directions while staying at the same altitude and angle. The long thin one changes the altitude of the view.

Now the top one is the most powerful of the viewpoint commands, this is like moving your head, you can move it to the right and left and up and down. By clicking on the outer ring you can move it to the left and right, it the view continues to rotate single click the outer ring and it will stop.

If you click and gently drag on the arrows on the top control it will move the view like moving your head around.

So in summary the three controls on the top right move the view around. The long thin one is like stretching your neck, the middle one is for walking around and the top one is for moving the position of you neck.

Also if you have a wheel on your mouse you can use that to zoom in and out, this zoom happens along your current line of sight.

Becks - looks good to me.

I have installed Glasto/google earth on my laptop and have both a decent graphics card and internet connection but for some unknown reason it doesn't like my laptop so I deleted it. Not like I need to use it that often and the fine guide map gives me a good enough idea of where we're talking.
becks
My laptop won't work it either. I can only use it at work.

Thank you Miss Rebecca - your place sounds ideal: we're Pyramid people mostly, and it'll be a handy retreat. I have a quiz book - should I bring it?

Sonny: We think of it more as increasing the value of the tents around us wink.gif

Oi Miss just because I'm Welsh! I stopped the arson sometime in the 90's.
µ
We have more Glasto kit biggrin.gif

We went to GoOutdoors & got a pop up tent for £15. I think it's worth exactly what we paid for it & will be just fine at Camp Becks. We also got a fleece for £1.99 each & a cool lantern what winds up & everything.

Is it time to get FUCKING GIDDY yet? Is it? IS IT???

Sort it out or I'll sit on your tent.

I'd just like to say FUCK ME it's (essentially) in a week! I'm excited. Please please please let the weather be as it was today. Countryfile was kind of optimistic for this point in time.

I'm booze planning, wondering where all my stuff is and having odd moments where I think "gaffer tape!" while in the middle of doing something else.

Eeek!!

I think we are in the middle of the June Typhoon which is amezin.

So, I think our camp should be called Camp Trash. I tried at Wychwood to tidy up a bit every morning but by about 2pm it was worse than before. We don't leave a trace but fuck me, you know we are there.

Who is the fire monitor? Do we need any bits and pieces communally, like fire starter thingy bobs? Lori & I have a big gazebo & I have a string and a half of fairy lights & a table.

Oh my, I'm well having a fit of excitement. I very nearly made Greg spend £400 on a new tent yesterday but he said that Simon would only burn holes in the floor. Fucking Simon.

To be fair to Simon he probably would manage to put out any potential burning by using the solar shower he decided to keep inside the tent.
becks
The nice new tent I saw had the groundsheet sewn onto the actual tent so if Simon created a massive puddle inside for the duration of the festival I can see this working.
